Somewhere in the house, a dog hears the familiar rustle of a backpack and suddenly appears, tail wagging, eyes full of hope.

Whether the plan is a short woodland wander or a full day exploring the Highlands, the ritual is always much the same. A few minutes spent packing the right essentials can make the difference between simply going for a walk and enjoying every moment of the journey.

This isn't a list of expensive gadgets or the latest trends. It's a collection of practical items we've come to rely on over countless miles, muddy boots and happy dogs.

Let's pack the walking bag.

1. A Comfortable Pair of Walking Boots

Your boots will carry you over every mile of the journey, so they're the one item worth choosing carefully.

Comfort always comes first. Waterproof protection, dependable grip and good ankle support all become more important once the path turns rocky, wet or uneven. The Highlands have a habit of changing from sunshine to showers in a matter of minutes, and your footwear needs to be ready for both.

A reliable pair of boots doesn't need to be the most expensive on the shelf. The best walking boots are the ones you forget you're wearing because they're simply doing their job.

2. A Reliable Lead

A good lead is one of those items you never really think about... until you need it.

Whether you're passing livestock, crossing a quiet country lane or simply giving your dog a little extra guidance, a comfortable, dependable lead is an everyday essential.

3. Fresh Water & a Collapsible Bowl

Dogs need regular water just as much as we do.

Technology is brilliant...

Until it isn't.

Phone signal can disappear surprisingly quickly once you venture into more remote areas, so carrying a paper map or downloading your route before leaving home provides welcome peace of mind.
