Welcome to Bothy & Bark.

These Terms & Conditions govern your use of bothyandbark.com and the content available through our website.

Bothy & Bark is operated by Emma Courtney trading as Bothy & Bark, a sole trader based in the Scottish Highlands, United Kingdom.

By using our website, you agree to these Terms & Conditions. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the website.

1. About Bothy & Bark

Bothy & Bark is a British countryside lifestyle website inspired by dogs, craftsmanship, life outdoors and the welcoming spirit of a Highland bothy.

Our website may include:

  • editorial articles and stories;

  • walking routes, maps and countryside guides;

  • photography and other creative content;

  • product recommendations;

  • affiliate links;

  • information about makers, places and businesses; and

  • links to third-party websites and retailers.

At present, Bothy & Bark does not sell physical products directly through this website.

Where we recommend a product and provide an affiliate link, any purchase is made from the third-party retailer rather than Bothy & Bark.

2. Using Our Website

You may use Bothy & Bark for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes.

You must not use our website:

  • unlawfully or fraudulently;

  • in a way that could damage, disable or interfere with the website;

  • to introduce malicious software or harmful code;

  • to attempt unauthorised access to our website or related systems;

  • to collect information about other visitors without lawful authority; or

  • to reproduce or commercially exploit our content without permission.

We may change, suspend or withdraw parts of the website where reasonably necessary.

3. Our Content

We put considerable care into the content published on Bothy & Bark.

However, our journal articles, recommendations, photographs, walking guides and other content are provided primarily for general information and inspiration.

Although we aim to keep information accurate and useful, circumstances can change and we cannot guarantee that all information will always be complete, current or suitable for every individual.

You should use your own judgement and, where appropriate, check current information with the relevant authority, land manager, retailer, business or service provider.

4. Walking Routes, Maps & Outdoor Content

Bothy & Bark may publish walking routes, maps, photographs, suggested places to visit and other outdoor information through features such as Trails, Tales & Maps.

Outdoor conditions can change quickly.

Weather, tides, paths, access arrangements, livestock, wildlife, forestry operations, parking arrangements, public transport, closures and other conditions may differ from those described when our content was originally published.

Distances, walking times and difficulty descriptions are approximate and may vary depending on conditions and individual ability.

Before setting out, you should:

  • check current weather and local conditions;

  • use appropriate and up-to-date navigation;

  • ensure the route is suitable for your experience and ability;

  • wear and carry suitable clothing and equipment;

  • check current access information and restrictions;

  • follow relevant countryside and access guidance; and

  • make your own assessment of whether it is safe to continue.

In remote or mountainous areas, appropriate navigation skills and preparation may be necessary.

Bothy & Bark content should not be treated as a substitute for appropriate maps, professional instruction, official safety information or your own judgement.

5. Walking With Dogs

Where we describe somewhere as dog-friendly, this does not necessarily mean dogs can be off lead throughout the route or that conditions will be suitable for every dog.

Access requirements and circumstances may change.

Livestock, wildlife, nesting birds, seasonal restrictions, roads, cliffs, water, weather and other hazards may require dogs to be kept under close control or on a lead.

Please check current local information and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code where applicable in Scotland, as well as relevant rules and guidance elsewhere in Britain.

You remain responsible for assessing whether a walk or location is appropriate for you and your dog.

6. Affiliate Links

Some links on Bothy & Bark are affiliate links.

This means we may receive a commission if you follow an affiliate link and make a qualifying purchase.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Affiliate relationships are explained further in our Affiliate Disclosure.

7. Third-Party Products and Retailers

Products featured in The Pantry or elsewhere on Bothy & Bark may be sold by third-party retailers.

When you follow an affiliate or retailer link, you leave the Bothy & Bark website.

At present, Bothy & Bark does not process the resulting order, payment or delivery.

Your purchase is made directly from the relevant retailer and will be subject to that retailer's terms and conditions.

Questions concerning matters such as:

  • payment;

  • stock availability;

  • delivery;

  • cancellations;

  • returns;

  • refunds;

  • warranties; and

  • faulty products

should normally be directed to the retailer from whom you purchased the product.

Nothing in these Terms affects any statutory rights you may have against the relevant seller under applicable consumer law.

8. Product Information, Prices & Availability

We aim to provide useful information about products we feature.

However, third-party retailers may change their prices, descriptions, specifications, availability, promotions and delivery arrangements without notice to us.

Information shown on Bothy & Bark may therefore occasionally differ from the information displayed by the retailer.

Please check the retailer's current listing before purchasing.

9. Recommendations & Reviews

Our recommendations reflect our own selection and editorial approach.

Some products may have been personally purchased or used by us.

Others may be selected following research because we believe they could be useful or relevant to Bothy & Bark visitors.

Where we say that we have personally used, tested or owned something, we mean that we have done so.

We will not intentionally represent a product as personally tested where it has not been.

Individual experiences with products can vary, and a recommendation does not guarantee that a product will be suitable for everyone.

10. External Links

Our website may contain links to websites operated by other organisations.

These links are provided because we believe they may be useful or relevant.

We do not control third-party websites and are not responsible for their availability, content, privacy practices or terms.

A link does not necessarily mean that Bothy & Bark endorses everything published by the third party.

11. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, the original content on Bothy & Bark, including our written content, branding, layouts, graphics and original photography, belongs to Emma Courtney trading as Bothy & Bark or is used with appropriate permission or licence.

Bothy & Bark branding, original written material and original photographs must not be copied, reproduced, republished, sold, commercially exploited or substantially adapted without prior permission, except where permitted by law.

You are welcome to share links to our publicly available pages.

If you would like to reproduce or licence Bothy & Bark photography or other original material, please contact:

12. User Messages and Contributions

If you contact Bothy & Bark or submit material for possible inclusion on our website, you confirm that you have the right to provide that material.

We will not publish personal stories, photographs or other contributed material as website content without an appropriate basis for doing so.

Any future competitions, submissions or community features may have additional terms.

13. Liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.

Subject to those rights and requirements, Bothy & Bark is not responsible for losses arising solely from reasonable reliance on general editorial information where circumstances have subsequently changed or information supplied by an independent third party has become inaccurate.

You remain responsible for making appropriate decisions about outdoor activities, third-party purchases and the suitability of products or routes for your circumstances.

14. Privacy and Cookies

Your use of Bothy & Bark is also subject to our:

Privacy Policy
Cookie Policy
Affiliate Disclosure

These documents explain how we handle personal information, use cookies and disclose commercial relationships.

15. Changes to These Terms

Bothy & Bark will continue to grow, and these Terms may need to change as the website develops.

We may update them to reflect changes to our content, services, technology or legal requirements.

The latest version will be published on this page with its most recent update date.

In particular, these Terms will need to be updated if Bothy & Bark begins selling products directly to customers, rather than referring visitors to third-party retailers.

16. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Scotland.

If you are a consumer elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you may also benefit from mandatory protections provided by the law applicable where you live.
