The Quiet Paths We Remember
Walks & Places
Some walks stay with you long after the mud has dried from your boots.
They are rarely the biggest adventures or the highest summits. More often, they're the quiet woodland paths where birdsong echoed through the trees, the familiar route around a reservoir after work, or the empty stretch of beach where the only footprints belonged to you and your dog.
Long before Bothy & Bark found its home in the Highlands, Bruce and I explored Derbyshire together.
He loved woodland trails where every fallen log held another scent to investigate. We wandered around the limestone valleys and rivers of Matlock Bath, spent peaceful afternoons in local nature reserves, and escaped to the wide beaches of England's east coast whenever we could.
Bruce never cared how far we'd walked.
He was happiest simply being outside.
Head down.
Tail wagging.
Always curious about what lay around the next bend.
Looking back now, I realise those walks shaped far more than our weekends. They taught me to slow down, to notice changing seasons, and to understand that the best places are often the quiet ones that never appear on a tourist map.
After Bruce passed away, life eventually led me north to the Scottish Highlands.
The landscapes became larger, the mountains taller and the lochs deeper, but the feeling remained exactly the same.
Walking has never been about reaching somewhere.
It's about noticing where you already are.
That is what this part of The Shelf is for.
Over time, we'll share some of our favourite places. Woodland walks, quiet beaches, forgotten bothies, hidden glens and peaceful paths that invite you to leave your phone in your pocket and simply enjoy the journey.
Some routes will be well known.
Others may be places you've never heard of.
All of them have earned their place on our shelf.
Perhaps one day you'll walk them too.
