Bruce: The Dog Who Started Everything

A rescue spaniel. A remarkable journey. The heart behind Bothy & Bark.

Every story has a beginning.

Mine began with a black and white Springer Spaniel called Bruce.

When I first met him, he was just seven months old. He had already been returned to the rescue centre three times. At such a young age, he'd experienced more uncertainty than any dog should ever know.

No one could tell him that his forever home was finally waiting.

Neither of us knew it then, but we were about to change each other's lives.

A Second Chance

Bruce arrived full of life.

He was excitable, endlessly curious and always ready for an adventure. There wasn't a woodland path he didn't want to explore or a new scent he didn't have to investigate.

But behind all that excitement was the gentlest soul.

The moment we walked through the front door, it was as though someone had flicked a switch. He would quietly curl up on the sofa or at the end of my bed, content simply to be close. If you didn't know he was there, you'd hardly hear a sound.

After everything he'd been through, all he ever really wanted was somewhere he belonged.

Growing Up Together

When Bruce joined our family, we were living in Derbyshire, England.

My daughter was just four years old, and in many ways they grew up together.

Bruce became her best friend, her protector and her constant companion. He was there through birthdays, school mornings, family holidays and countless ordinary days that somehow became unforgettable because he was part of them.

Looking back now, some of our happiest memories are wrapped up in muddy paws, wagging tails and laughter.

Adventures Across England

Bruce had an adventurous spirit.

Our weekends were rarely spent indoors. He loved wandering through Derbyshire's woodlands, exploring the beautiful trails around Matlock Bath, discovering quiet nature reserves and racing along the beaches of England's east coast with the sea breeze in his ears.

He never cared where we were.

As long as we were together, every walk was an adventure.

Those years taught me that nature has a remarkable way of slowing life down. Bruce noticed everything. A new path. A flowing stream. The sound of birds in the trees.

Some of life's greatest moments aren't planned.

They're simply shared.

The Journey Continues

After Bruce passed away, life took me somewhere completely new.

It was then that I moved north to the Scottish Highlands.

Although Bruce never walked these Highland glens or stood beside Scotland's lochs, his spirit is everywhere in Bothy & Bark.

The Highlands became the landscape that inspired the brand.

Bruce became the heart behind it.

Together, they shaped the vision you see today.

More Than a Dog

People often say we rescue dogs.

The truth is, I think Bruce rescued parts of me too.

He taught me patience.

He taught me loyalty.

He taught me that trust isn't demanded, it's earned.

Most of all, he taught me that home isn't measured by walls or possessions. Home is wherever you're loved without condition.

Those lessons have never left me.

The Beginning of Bothy & Bark

When I began dreaming about Bothy & Bark, I realised every idea kept leading back to Bruce.

The quiet comfort of a bothy.

The warmth of a green door left open.

Natural materials.

Timeless craftsmanship.

The companionship of dogs.

A feeling of belonging.

Bothy & Bark isn't simply a collection of products.

It's an attempt to create the feeling Bruce gave our family every single day.

A place where everyone feels welcome.

Looking Forward

Bruce's story doesn't end here.

His paw prints are woven into everything Bothy & Bark will become.

As this little business grows, one of my greatest hopes is to work alongside dog rescue charities, helping other dogs find the second chance that Bruce was so fortunate to receive.

If Bothy & Bark can help even one dog find a forever home, then Bruce's legacy will continue far beyond our own family.

A Paw Print That Never Fades

Bruce may have been one dog.

But he became my greatest adventure, my daughter's childhood companion and the inspiration behind a dream that continues to grow.

Every time you see the green door, know that it first opened for a rescue spaniel who simply wanted somewhere to belong.

And in many ways...

It never closed.
